Schoolclass in Tihama – Yemen

Yemen is a muslim country where women are supposed to follow the coranic law saying they should cover their head as soon as they are old enough to get married.
The question whether they should cover their face is much debated within the muslim communities themselves and relies on later interpretations of the prophet’s words, which actually doesn’t mention covering the face.
This school is an example that differents attitudes can easily coexist in a neighbourhood, in this country which is much more diversified and openminded than can be supposed when one just listens to the voice of the media obsessed by the terrorist problem.

Amazing shot Helene!!! How interesting to have been in attendance here. Would love to hear the story behind this one…well done!!!

  • Thanks for your visit Keryn ! Actually I was visiting many school (and other social and medical structures) to document the investment of the government in the development of the country. It certainly gave me an unusual view of such a ill-known country as Yemen and I had great moments with wonderful people. The schools display a mixture of all various degrees of openmindness of the population, more a rainbow than B&W actually… ;-)
