Ra’s al-Jinz – Oman Marine turtle going back to the sea at dawn, after a hard night spent delivering her eggs in the sand. Actually this one was saved from a certain death as she got stuck between rocks on the beach during the operation. She would have dried to death under the sun if we hadn’t come early to watch the sunrise, found her desperately trying to escape, and pulled her backwards from the rocks. She rushed back to the sea before the sun came too high and hot, but thanksfully – I believe indeed… – allowed us to shoot her on her way with a beautiful light.
Great shot, Helene, and a great story. Well done, you saved a life! These wonderful creatures need all the help they can get; they always seem on vulnerable on land and the whole process of struggling up the beach, laying the eggs and getting back to the relative safety of the ocean a huge effort. Brilliant.
Thanks David. When you think that 99% of her eggs and baby turtles will serve only to feed birds and foxes (otherwise I guess humanity would be surrounded with giant turtles !!!), we and our deeds feel very little in the hand of big mother Nature…

Good luck for all of us ! Normally they go back to the water before sunrise and there is no chance for good pictures…
