Just laundry – Syria

Would like you to share this wonderful piece of writing which has been composed by young poet Whatkindofgod inspired by one of my pictures displayed on an interesting blog (Stories without words is a web site launched by fair redbubbler Roka where anybody can write stories, poetries or any kind of comments on pictures she has chosen. A very nice place for creativity !). I was really struck by the strength of the words written by this 19 years old incredibly talented guy, from a picture which appearently is far from drama… Please have a look at his work !

In search of a wild and innocent thing.
by Whatkindofgod

The blue tract is silent, still and fading
We, though a small band of brothers
March inspired, beneath a loving sentry
In search of a wild and innocent thing

Through wide seas of malachite bayonets
Across hard barren lands and burnt deserts
Every horizon brought a more menacing scene
Whilst in search of a wild and innocent thing

As long and far as our traipse would go
Into alien lands and countries unknown
When set upon as though we were thieves
In search of a wild and innocent thing

Now hung from the sky, we swing with the wind
We band of brothers together died at each others feet
We found a reason to die but a better reason to live
We found ourselves again; a wild and innocent thing

the story behind this is worth asking for, like the way the pole meets the lines on the landscape

  • A very parable like story… The scene takes place in the north of Syria, a very fertile hence rural area. After his youth spent in the frenzy of “dissolute” Beyrouth, the father decided to come back to his land along the Euphrates river to live from farming, fishing, and… growing his family. When the 13th baby delivery almost killed the mother (aged about 35 !), the physician had to fight to convince them they had to put an end to their expansion. And they did. The father explained to me that his wife was like the central post of the tent : without her the whole building would collapse… They loved their children so much, 6 daughters and 7 sons, they had wanted another girl in addition, at least… However, the last baby became one of the most lively and cutest little boy I know, and the mother has given away at least ten years from her face and body since she stopped being pregnant all the time (but still she loved being pregnant all the time…). To complete the story, it has to be said that the elder boy, in search for “real life in the big city”, went to spend a few months in Beyrouth, and eventually chose quite quickly to return to his father’s home…
To come back to the picture, laundry was constantly hanging to dry on the roof of their house, as can be imagined, and this is what I found on one of my visits… I cannot be credited for the scenography.

Avery good capture, and the arrangement of the toys on the line prove (at least to me) that the mother still kept her sense of humour :-)

  • Thank you Themis, they all are (and still now, I phoned to them recently) the most joyful people on earth !
