THE PERNOD DRINKER
oil on canvas, 18 X 26 inches

The busy bar, full of light and sound, and diminishing connections to reality. The Pernod Drinker faces the viewer, hand filled with the licorice yellow, both getting pleasantly cloudy. She’s hair-twirling, maybe not so sure about the thinking she’s thinking but it will lead to some place untried. HERE I AM, she says. What? she says. Are you talking to me?

I have a different take than the French Impressionists, but this is Pernod, less lethal than Cousin Absinthe, less likely to lead down dark twisting pathways. Only, maybe, a morning hangover.

A couple embrace in the upper left corner, the feet of two talkers are seen through The Pernod Drinker’s crooked arm; a man at the bar holds a glass of ruby red. Headlights flash in the front window and bar signs shine, customers chat, the music levels rise. Yes, a good place. This is a good place.

The one of a kind, ORIGINAL OIL PAINTINGS is available for sale. $995. USD.

Barbara, I only wish I actually owned a factory that produced Pastis, cause I would have this picture on every label of every bottle. All with proper reserved rights and stuff natch.
And don’t even THINK of telling me you haven’t been there cause that look in her eyes does not come from bourbon or gin or Tia Maria or even worm infested tequila. You got it perfect. And yes, I can already feel her headache.
It’s all in the confusion that not only swirls around her, but through her… it’s a different high that’s maybe less lethal than its cousin in the long term, but on a one to one session every bit as debilitating :-)

The coolest thing, and I really mean this, is that you can do this on at least equal terms with any French impressionist I’ve ever seen the work of, and not die alone and penniless from it.
In fact I don’t really wanna say this cause I might just some day muster up the cash to buy this off you and in the meantime will pray every day that it’s not been sold (sorry)…
But you’re selling it way too cheap.

I so love your stuff Baba.

  • Thank you brilliant Billy for such high praise. My Big Sur gallery was right next to a pub. They didn’t always produce interesting night life but sometimes they hit it. One mellow sunsetting late afternoon a young guy, who seemed to have appeared from the very wooded hillside and Big Sur River itself, wove himself across the little paved stones in front of us and, ecstatic, loud, declared, “I’ve just tasted my first absinthe!!” We were all impressed. He may have had some mystery mushroom chaser.
In any and all events it kind of stuck with me. Some trips to golden oblivion are worth recording, standing clear of, sharing the joy, sans prejudice. I did the girl instead, they’re easier to decorate. That’s the painting.

A great tribute to the drink and the mood it may create, if consumed as it should… wonderful impressionistic canvas, Barbara

  • Thanks, Nikolay. Ah yes, Pernod is lovely stuff.

    …Brit…

  • Many thanks, Brit, for the visit and favorite. The color was great to just surge ahead on, nightclubs and bars are all color to me.
