Kittens, Day At The Beach (Detail) by

Oil on Linen
Still working on this, but it’s been great fun.
I started with a photograph of the two kittens, (George Jones and Tammy Wynette by the way), who were transfixed when the home curtains opened to reveal a thousand birds in the garden.
I added the usual cat indulgences, put them under a carved winged-lion chair, beach bumbershoot and wrap, insects, bugs, dragonflies, and natch, birds.

Sorry for the long absence. Lot going on, miss you all and will visit my buddies sites soon.

Beautiful cat portrait . . . awesome work!

  • Thank you so much. I’m out of some important ingredients and have to put a hold on work until I restock via internet. I’ll post the finished job soon. You make me very pleased that I decided to do this mid-stream and I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

OMG! You are such a gifted artist, this is Exquisite, so richly and beautifully done down to the last detail,,,
I would love to feature any of your Paintings with Cats or Dogs in my group
    Cats and Dogs
wouldn’t that class up the joint!

    Laura

  • You’re very kind, Laura. I suddenly found that I had time to really work on paintings (gallery business is very slow) and the complexity is always an added treat when I can. I should be finished in a week or so, and I’ll post the final version. If being featured in your group is as easy as saying ‘yes’, then, ‘yes’, I’d be honored. And thank you. Let me know if there’s more to it.

  • Much appreciated, Julie. I’ve always had cats in my life but only really started painting them recently.

Barbara, I’ve known for some time now that you’re a gifted artist. And every gifted artist has something special, something unique that sets them apart from other gifted artists… cause in fact it’s uniqueness that IS the gift, even taking technical ability into account.

And as I’ve spent LOTS of time staring at your work and trying to figure out exactly what it is that makes me not want to look away even when it’s way past my bedtime, I think it’s high time I try to sum it up as best I can… and fortunately you just happened to do a kitty picture to make it even more fun for me!

This kind of reminds me of a Grand Master painting with the subjects so perfectly posed (how DID you actually get them to sit so still for so long???:-) and surrounded by still life and nature.
But what you add to the mix is the most important ingredient of all. And that is YOUR soul.
Any good artist can bring out the soul of their subject, whether through a pose or a smile or a twinkle in the eyes… but I’ve always believed that a truly gifted artist finds away of bringing together their own soul with that of their subject to create a true and complete emotional experience.

This is all down to the way YOU perceive George and Tammy… these are not the usual cat indulgences Barbara, these are your indulgences that so beautifully intercourse with theirs. And the result is (and it’s not even finished yet!!) an overwhelming testament to your amazing ability to reflect your own karma off your subjects.

I absolutely love this, my favorite of all your work to date.
Even though you’ve still got to add the fish.
Thanks for blowing my mind in the most beautiful way possible :-)
    xo

  • Oh, Billy. Thank you for your very beautiful words, and taking so much time to sort out the effect on you of what you see. That’s very bright, and not something I’d realized, you’re right…they are indulgences I have with cats and I am beaming rightnow to have it pointed out by you.
I DO try to put myself, my experience into the paintings I make. I am never sure that it’s there, but I always know when it’s there and won’t feel right until. And I did want a kind of grand master look, cats instead of the Bishop or the potentate. Good catch, Billy. The closest, bye the bye, I got to a fish is a starfish, not visible here. But you’ve given me an idea and I may introduce a flying fish. When there’s time to work, to just keep going with a painting, I always regret not having left enough space. I never plan anything in advance. And as you’ll see with The Artist’s Table I keep running out of room with ideas increasing in proportion.
The kiten’s expressions are pretty close to where I am headed, still a bit more work to be done. I KNOW for a fact cats have a huge range of facial expressions, and wanted this to be a kind of wonderment, tinged with mischief, but nobody in it in danger. It’s been an interesting painting to do.
That you got so interested in it is a reward for me beyond compare, as it always is with your comments. You do me, toujours, a world of good and, toujours baby, thank you.
    xxo
