Detail, The Voyager's Prayer

Detail, The Voyager's Prayer

The subtitle is “Angels Protect Me on My Journey”, a prayer on waking, on getting out on the right side of bed, on hitting the road, on thinking a new thought.

Nice supersized.

Oil on canvasboard. Actually a very small painting, and this is a detail which has a lot of nice drama going on in it. The color from the original is slightly altered, but I liked the terra cotta – green kind of wash I got by fooling with it in post op, or whatever you brilliant photographers on RB call that.

I love the way you lay your paint down. Such power and movement in each stroke. I like the colors too. Just right for Fall.

  • Barbara Sparhawk replied

Thank you so much, Sandra. I dream, and will someday have, a studio so large that the walls and ceiling are not visible to the naked eye. And I will run with all the speed and power in me, loaded brush in hand, to a monumentally huge canvas, hesitating only to fill my brushes from a million pots of paint in front of it, and never stop moving til I drop. Ah.

This is beautiful. Makes you feel safe and warm. I just love how you paint Barbara. You have a very special talent.

  • Barbara Sparhawk replied

David, many thanks for what you wrote. I think I painted it for myself, when I needed that kind of hug. Aren’t artists resourceful, we can fabricate and make ourselves happy doing it. And I know I was thinking about other people who needed comfort too.

hi Barbara, have been offline-computer problems! Great to see your new work. Wonderful painterly brushstrokes (like Rubens the master) and with the uplift and rising of the pyramidal structure found in the cropping… fantastic. It is great to feel the presence of an angel (s) over the shoulder, keeping us on the path. I am sure I have been blessed and you must be too to paint it. Amazing that the spaces around the figures are also very alive with energy, complimenting not dominating the content.. love the subdued colour.

  • Barbara Sparhawk replied

Hi rosepepper! Sorry about the computer glitches, it’s a devastating experience, how we count on these little machines! My goodness, thank you so much for your words. You’re always an education. And thanks for the note on the spaces around the figures. I see the dance of molecules, I’ve always tried to paint it. I’ve never heard the music of the spheres, but I believe I see it.

Here emerges a storm of power, beauty and energy, in all the glory an angel deserves. How you convey energy and emotion never ceases to amaze me Barbara! You spin me out!

  • Barbara Sparhawk replied

Louise, we’ve got so much untapped in us. It’s like the challenge of learning a foreign tongue. The only thing that ever really scares me, scares me deep and ancient inside, is collapse into indifference and I battle it when it appears in me.

Gorgeous!! where did ‘Georgia Okeefe’ go?

  • Barbara Sparhawk replied

You’re amazing, Susi. That was so fast! I was working on a calendar with Georgia on the cover, and had to upload a larger pixel-plus version, and kept checking the list: private, not for public, not for sale…and the darn thing kept popping up on the webpage ‘art’ site and I deleted it! The first time Georgia O’Keeffe was on my page 2, about the third one down, months ago. The process on RB for calendars is more complicated for me and with fewer design options, so I’ve been making them on www.zazzle.com/buccaneer (my nom de plume), and they’ve actually started selling! Thanks for like this one, and asking about GO.

Ha! I LOVE Georgia Okeefe! Not just her art, but her as a person and caught a quick peek of what looked like a great portrait!
Because of her I have always wanted to visit New mexico and hope to come day!
