The Beach on Long Island

Oil Painting, on canvas board
Sun and sand and romance for Brooklynites. And one man I actually had a long if tempestuous relationship with. We loved and warred with equal passion, and this was a magical day which I still remember fondly. God he was so good-looking. And he could cook! I thought he shot the moon. Or hung the moon. Whichever it is, that feeling that girls get when they’re head over tea-kettle.
I paint a lot of experiences that have a profound effect on me. Sometimes they hustle inside my brain for years before I get to it, but eventually it all pours out. This, I believe I painted right in the middle of all the fine emotional uproar going on. How time passes.

No one paints with more emotion or has the ability to tell a story through their canvas than you! Why aren’t you world famous, my friend? That makes no sense to me because you and your work are both gorgeous and amazing!

  • Barbara Sparhawk replied

My good buddy, thanks for this. I’m developing the dreadful feeling that I’ll be incredibly famous when I’m dead. Ah well. I’m having fun.

I don’t have enough words to express how much I love this work Barbara…........xxoo

  • Barbara Sparhawk replied

So funny, the stuff I hesitate about showing. This among them because it’s personal but there’s a dopey thought, it all is and none of it’s good unless it is. Ruth, thank you.
I used a real light wash with the pigment, the whole experience was kind of dreamy. If memory serves, we were really falling in love and that day was a kind of clincher. We had not been together long enough to cause each other trouble, that came later, but damn that day on the beach was special and I’ll never forget it.

Many thanks, Lulybelle. It is one of the greatest values of creative work, a blank canvas for high flying emotion.

Dream-like, still real, a very nice representation of that love… I like the contrast of the sky with sand and both lovers. The world against us, or… nothing else matters… We are that world and we invent our story of magic and tender touch… You wonderfully tell stories in both ways, Barbara, by simple use of words (which is mastership) and by brush – colourful paints and deep emotions!
