It’s right there at the heart
of my own understanding,
jagged and raised,
like a dusty gravel road
white like the heaven that bore it’s need,
dark as the mountian’s core
it stands,
right beside my own
healing reminder.
My scars trace yours
with the healing fingers
of starlight chasing a comet’s tail,
feeling its own wish;
tasting it’s own
purpose upon
this desolate plane
called home,
raising even higher to meet
your secret road.
You are a dark-eyed raven
with the soul of Raphael,
and the heart of RA –
an amalgamation of perpetuity
hidden only from those who have known
no suffering;
no reason;
no Have To!
no death;
no clawing of face, nor gnashing
of broken teeth;
no screaming from endless cold-steel hallways;
no weeping from the dungeon –
shoulders rattling your previously shed
hung up dead bones, still bearing
their twisted
rusted shackles
from the pieces of you, you had to kill
in order to just open
your weary eyes to the flesh
of the un-chained screamer
on another damn new day.
There are few who choose to claw.
Even fewer who continue to dig
with the mashed-up pulp of their raw
fingers when the pain
of all that fucking digging
hurts so god damn bad!
So bad it feels like you are an inferno –
each nerve ending ablaze, while your skin drips
to the sucking dirt floors;
each pore wanting nothing more than to run
itself loose
into the frozen, forgetting pool of:
FUCK IT ALL TO HELL!
I give up.
I surrender.
swallow me up, now.
Please…
swallow me whole.
But you?
You claw.
You dig.
You choose
You Live.
You rip a hole for your new-found reason
in the monumental stone wall –
out of the dungeon to which you were cast;
you squeeze through the wormhole that has branded you
and raise your face to the warm yellow sun…
Breathing deeply…praying
your secret prayers
into the hearts of those
who can hear you –
the others who have left
their own skeletons
behind…
You are jagged, but raised,
facing the heaven that bore your need,
naming you free so others who see
can recognize their own need
for their own
healing sun;
seeing it through your gentle fingers
and beautiful face;
seeing their own worth through
another’s like story,
touching their scars
with your own.

I love you and I remember when you first shared this with me. I am very deeply touched by your understanding and your expression of such. I an sometimes overwhelmed by the bond we share, and the feeling of your heart against my own. I needed this today (today more than most days)...and that is what I mean by your heart against mine. You knew. I love you for that…I love you for this…I just love you. Thank you.
Kristin Reynolds replied
Me, too, my friend. :) but that is the beauty of it. no need for reason…somethings just are .

Incredibly good writing! I have lived this myself; have not revisited these images and feelings for sometime—-and you brought all back to me, a flood of pain with joy of resurrection more vivid than I could ever imagine on my own. Splendid poetry!
Kristin Reynolds replied
Perfect comment, thank you. :) I have had to live this, as well as squeeeze my way through that insufferable hole…but once out? wow. the weight lifted…no words for that feeling of new birth.
thank you, :) xo

to die and wiggle free of the skeleton is already a huge achievement – it is the beginning of all that is possible. in the bone-prison nothing exists beyond dreams. your writing is beautiful, perceptive and brave.
Kristin Reynolds replied
yes it is, indeed. wrestling that dead-suit off will never be a regret. seeing the light of day, in its true form; it’s like the rays of clear light in spring, you know, when they are angeled just so, so different if you are one to notice them, even if I had no calender or skin to feel temperature, by the light of the rays, I’d know that spring anywhere.
thank you, J. :)

Kristin, there is little modern poetry that moves me as deeply as this. Thank you for sharing your gift.
“There are few who choose to claw.” <
-I feel this. I have often wondered how so many can choose so little…Simply beautiful, and powerful.
Kristin Reynolds replied
Wow, what a compliment! Thank you, Gary, that means alot to me, really. nothing like moving another through your art, is there? :)
how can so many choose so little? my feeling is that they do not wish to feel. they covet the numb of predictable illusion.
thank you so much, Kristin

I missed this in my absence apparently Kristin – but I can only add my total admiration for the love and compassion and understanding you express for a friend, knowing as I do that you too have lived through much the same thing. You are both not only survivors, but conquerors – no longer victim because you choose not to be and to rise above it. You have both chosen to claw – and you’ve expressed both the pain and the victory in this incredibly powerful and compelling piece.
Kristin Reynolds replied
thank you for your understanding Lianne. clawing is the only way to get to the light.
thank you. :)
