Draconian Flame

This is the first poem I wrote after 15 years or so of not writing poetry. I wrote it in the bathroom while my kids we splashing about in the tub. That day, 17 poems came out of me. This was the first.
The flood of words has yet to cease.
I uncorked. :)

This is about learning, growth, suffering, and knowing the point at which it all becomes clear; then acting.

Draconian Flame belongs to the following groups:

Escape from within
this draconian flame
comes not with the promise
of remembrance,
but battered flesh that taunts the meek;
calling all who seek its warmth
down to the depths
of wills remorse.

To leave would be to sever body from spirit,
roots from earth;
to lose the coal that has burned since birth,

but to stay…

to stay and wear the veil of those
who have burned before
would be forsaking all life,
all lives.

When weakness fades within a promise
and a burning of heart, a lighting of soul
brings remembrance for another,
only then will escape become clear,
and passage set.

Coals will smolder,
and halls alight
with rekindled fervor
when the gift of flame
burns.

A beautiful tale of not just surviving but growing and expanding. :) Its like finding the best friend you lost when you write again after a dry spell isn’t it? Amazing work for having been your first in fifteen years. Love you lady K xoxo

  • Kristin Reynolds replied

yes it was…I had written childrens books for 5 yrs before beginning to write poetry again (I had been writing poetry since I was 8; steadily!) but then…kids…married to a…well..you know…lifelifelife, I let myself, and my dreams go…never again. once uncorked, I have not stopped. :) no intentions of doing so, either. xo

It takes enormous courage to leave actually – and you have survived to share so much with all of us, to give hope to others who are there now and perhaps do not believe that there is another kind of life – a light that burns for them too.

  • Kristin Reynolds replied

yes, an almost insurmountable mountain of courage to unstick the mechanical/routine self…leaving the abusive (to self or by others)safety zone is death.
    thanks you, L. :)

Why was this beautiful flame temporarily snuffed out?

  • Kristin Reynolds replied

see my above comment…I squashed myself down (my soul, and poetry) to compinsate for life, an abusive alcoholic husband, kids…no help…just me, all me…no time…I lost myself. BUT..here i am! :)

It’s amazing to think this came out in the manner in which it did. It simply needed to be written. It’s definately a sign of something. Keep writing. Don’t stop.

  • Kristin Reynolds replied

Yes indeed! I began writing poetry at the age of 8, and wrote constantly, I mean always, including reading the old greats from a very young age; I was so drawn to it – it’s the only way i knew to properly express myself; and when reading the great poets; how to feel through them what I was feeling…if that makes sense. anyway, I’m blabbing. :)
thank you..as you can see, it’s very hard for me to stop writing now, even comments! lol

ha! yes…and no. I started writing at about 7 or 8. my first poem was called: I like cats. lol

    I like cats
    up a tree
    or in a house
    with a ball
    or with a mouse -
    up a tree
    or on the ground,
    i like cats
    they’re all around

there was more…but that’s all i remember. lol seriously, that’s it! ha!

  • Kristin Reynolds replied
