The Waking Routine

This is a poem about my life spent living with a mean drunk. I am in the process of shedding the skin I had to grow just so I could keep breathing in that life. Let me just say, it was mighty hard. But…light cannot be covered; it always finds a way to shine.

In the morning,
post shower and cuppa joe –
You turn,
away from the news
and cough up
a night
of nuisance and panic.

Thrashing about
in some psychotic film
with You in the coveted director’s seat -
an air of certainty
and illusion.
This morning finds you shredded
on the cutting room floor,
circumspect and evident
in your own rendering.

Emotionally, you are

t h i n

(desperate
as a silent death)

You make no excuses
for the role you play (played,
always play) –
the gin takes care of that –
begging recognition for its invisibility –
a Napoleon complex on speed.

Negating his advances, she insists

“It will never work.”

“The baby’s awake.”

“We’ll be interrupted!”

You are a wounded patient – loud
and insisting your film was
Woody Allen fun.
Perhaps a bit silly, and totally
self indulgent, but harmless.

While her memory appeals to
her stubborn apathy –
re-playing the Jekyll and Hyde monstrosity,
for what seems like a never-ending
lifetime;
a tiresome and somewhat violent
film festival
in her own private theater,

that no-one
ever
sees.

Some people will never understand the meaning of equality of the sexes. What does it mean? It means that both are equal! Whether one person disbelieves it or not doesn’t change that fact. i applaud this poem because i applaud equality. Bravo! JH
