Mantra for the Soul

Another Rondeau form poem i wrote last year, meant to heal the guilty soul. So many of us feel guilt, whether warrented or not.
Guilt is a terrible burden, so I wrote this to try to remember when the everything of the world keeps trying to drag me down.

Mantra for the Soul belongs to the following groups:

Forgive yourself for all you’ve done,
for wrongs that made you long to run,
when hate became your saving grace,
when light grew dark upon your face,
when all you tried became undone…

When strength was lost and weakness won,
for all the times you’ve blocked out sun
from shining in a needy space,
forgive yourself.

For all the times their love was shunned,
when words were anger’s formless gun,
when hearts you broke could not replace
the fear inside that set your pace,
when you feel like the only one,
Forgive yourself.

awesome work my friend. I can relate to guilt on the level of Prometheus, he tried to do something good for people and take the fire from the gods to warm them and then he was punished for 100 years or so. In my personal spiritual journey I have felt guilt like this, I have dared to ask for something more out of life instead of just being content with what every other person swallows, and have felt sometimes like I’ve been punished bigtime by taking that step too far. So I guess that is a kind of guilt. Guilty because I don’t just take the copper coins I’m given and feel “grateful”, I’m always the idiot who says “where’s the gold?”. And that sometimes makes you terribly vulnerable. Your old life has died but your new one has not begun, so you wait like Promethus chained to a rock until the gods decide to let you go. And in that long dark uncertain period you feel fear and GUILT that you took the step in the first place when others don’t even bother trying. I’m rambling, but that is what your poem evoked in me. Thanks Kristin, and I forgive myself tonight.

(i loved your line “I put the her in hermit” lol)

  • Kristin Reynolds replied

Thank you, Jim, I really appriciate that. :)
You know, there is a reason for the saying, “No good deed goes unpunished” and it is so true, hense poor Prometheus and his tale.

_I have dared to ask for something more out of life instead of just being content with what every other person swallows, and have felt sometimes like I’ve been punished bigtime by taking that step too far. _ same here, exactly. but that is what, as Gurdjieff would call, “the Work” is all about. once you cross the border of ignorance and SEE the void, the expanse outside one’s prison, there IS no going back. you can either keep moving forward, or writhe amongst the chaos (and this is where chapel perilous comes in) which is 100 fold if you try to excape the unescapable of which you have already dipped your fingers into…nope. they will not let you go.

so forward it is. and it is not easy.

thanks for your insights, J, they are always welcome and food for my brain. :) I’m glad you liked it. love, K

I agree with you totally. However I would say just for the record that Gurdjieff’s methodology is not the only way to “awaken”. If a suffering person went to the Dalai Lama he would get quite a different treatment to if he went to Gurdjieff. And how do we say who is the more enlightened spiritual teacher? We cannot because they are made of the same human starstuff but they express light differently. So it is with the “all and everything”, if one can’t see that this is also just a morsel of the ALL then it does no good in my opinion. Gurdjieff, Jesus, Osho, John Lennon, Mother Teresa, Ghandi, Einstein, Shakespeare, Jimi Hendrix, Yogananda, Woody Allen…. all mystics who show different paths. The important thing is to know what you are made of. If you are a lizard, no good trying to be a donkey or a cat.

  • Kristin Reynolds replied

And again, i agree totally. :) I’m with ya. I still must say though, that once one sees, there is no unseeing…it’s like a window opened up that can never be closed; know what i mean?

love that you put in Jimi and woody. right on, man. :) so meany excellent teachers out there…cheers, my like-minded friend. K

yes but first you must give others, for in doing that you become whole and then forgive yourself and love yourself first….... that you may be able to love and forgive others for in this long life that is a bink of an eye we cross paths with so many beautiful and not so beautiful….. an angry souls, that look for venges from a past life…...those are the souls you forgive first, and in doing SO, you have forgiven yourself and you soul will be at peace no matter who doesnt forgive YOU!

  • Kristin Reynolds replied

Indeed. it took me many, many dark black years to forgive the man who ruined my life (or so i thought back then…) and so many others…so much pain…but forgiving him was the GREATEST gift I ever gave myself. :) thank you, love, K

Oh, you are so right, sometimes there is a guilt of some kind that we have to deal with and have to let go. Sometimes we ask for forgiveness, but for that you have to forgive yourself first. Thanks for sharing this one.

Self forgiveness….a difficult one to comment on Kristin…..I know it requires a deep search to unearth what is generally buried so deep by guilts long spade….I know it requires a strong fearless heart to face what is generally percieved as a failing in one’s soul…..have we/I the capacity to forgive oneself. I know we/I have the capacity to accept our/my wrongdoings as being part of our/my journey…is that the same thing? In most cases we/I can forgive others…is that an extension of us/me being able to forgive ourselves…..Good write Kristin, certainly got me thinking (as if I needed that lol). xoxo

  • Kristin Reynolds replied 27 days ago

yes, indeedy. to all your pondering, Cos. it’s not easy. none of it. it took me years to forgive others…not sure if I’ve taken my own pem to heart as of yet. :)
