Avalanche! (Annapurna) by

Massive evening avalanche, Annapurna South in the Nepali Himalaya (my son Josh is mesmerized!). Annapurna is one of the most avalanche-prone peaks in the Himalayas and has claimed the lives of many mountaineers.

How thrilling to see and feel one from a safe distance! Beautifully composed—how did you have time to set up?!

  • thanks Jan — even from this distance the noise was thunderous! No time to set-up — just point the camera, peel off a few images and hope that at least one of them worked!

Incredible shot Harry, reminds me of the Turner painting of the avalanche in the Swiss alps. The figure gives the image a really powerful scale.

  • thanks Mark. I don’t know the Turner painting — must look it up
