Falling Down

Photo taken at Sacred Heart Missionary

This is one of the few buildings that remain at Sacred Heart Missionary. Those buildings not taken by the fire, most were removed from sacred heart and taken to St. Gregory College, Shawnee.

On the night of January 15, 1901, came the disaster from which Sacred Heart never fully recovered. On a stormy night in January, a fire broke out in the dining room of the Indian Boys School and swept out of control. Before it was over the blaze had taken the monastery, boys’ school, college, girls’ school, convent, and the church. They were all gone within a few hours. The entire mission was destroyed with the exception of a few small buildings.

In 1987, a group of local parishioners banned together to stop the removal of the buildings to Shawnee and formed the Sacred Heart Mission Historical Society (SHMHS).

The Historical Society volunteers continue their effort of restoring and maintaining the mission grounds with the help of the Potawatomi Indians and many others.

  • Cindy RN replied

I agree Tony, I do believe this is one of the buildings they are going to renovate although, they will use the old logs, and as much of the old wood as they can, and try to make it as authenic as it once was. I guess we shall see.

  • Cindy RN replied

Thank you for the lovely comment, Loramae, I do hope this is one of the structures they chose to renovate, they rebuild using the old timber and such that is there, and try to make it as authentic as it once was…. If buildings could only talk ;)

So sad and yet it still remains. Thankyou for the information on the school did many lose their lives in the fire ?

  • Cindy RN replied

Actually Steven, a miracle but no one died that morning, a loss of a beautiful institution and the labors of the hard work and love and devotion that was put into the building of Sacred hearts was destroyed on that early morning..

  • Wendi Donaldson

    Wendi Donaldson

Terrific capture, so sad tho’. Nicely documented. Love hilary’s opening statement! :)

  • Cindy RN replied

It was a magnificent place before the fire, how I would loved to have seen it before the fire, and so much has been removed since, I love to go out there, it is so peaceful and beautiful, I wish everyone could go and experience it…that Hilary is a gem, is she not? :)
