Egg Run History…

The Wirral Easter Egg Run started in April 1980 and was a club ride out by Empress Motorcycle Club from New Brighton to Arrowe Park Hospital. About 20 bikes took part with every rider and pillion taking an Easter Egg to give to the children who were staying in hospital over the Easter period.

In 1982, the second Egg run expanded with friends of the Empress MCC also joining the run, bringing the number of motorcycles to just over 50.
The run increased in size every year and in 1986 approximately 250 bikes, ranging from mopeds and scooters through to tourers and sports bikes, took part donating over 400 Easter eggs.
An accurate count was taken in 1990 of 483 bikes (over 800 people as most of the bikes had two people on them), after which the run started growing at such a rate (over 1,500 bikes in 1994) that an official count was getting harder to record.
Due to coverage of the national motorcycle press there was a huge jump in figures to around 4000 bikes in 1996, with 30 police bikes and 100 marshals escorting the run.
In 1998 it was decided that due to the vast amount of Easter eggs being collected that monetary donations would be asked for instead of Easter eggs, as some people would still bring eggs but the children’s ward at Arrowe Park Hospital would also benefit from the toys / equipment.

In 1999 well over 8,000 Easter eggs and £1250 was raised and toys / equipment was purchased for the children’s ward.
In April 2000 the destination of the run had to change from Arrowe Park Hospital to Clatterbridge Hospital, because with Arrowe Park being the main Accident & Emergency department, they could not cope with the influx of bikes as it was getting increasingly difficult for doctors, nurses and ambulances to enter / leave the hospital when the run arrived.
With a police estimate of between 8000 and 15000 bikes, the amount of eggs donated was at such a scale that it was impossible to count with estimates of 20000 Easter eggs. Money raised this year grew to £6500.
2004 – 5000 bikes and approximately 8000 people.
The 2005 – 2006 unofficial
The total time it took for all the bikes to pass us was 1 and quarter hours!! Lotta bikes!!! 
