I Am Going To Paint Me a Mona Lisa

I am going to paint me a Mona Lisa
The one Michael Angelo envisioned to.
I am going to paint me the real Mona Lisa
The one Da Vinci was not able but wanted to.
My paintbrush full of love will give her life with different hues
She will be the one to see it all
But not from the position on a wall
You will admire her beauty from a rocking chair
Eating a mango or two
While she will be the Mona Lisa smiling that mysterious
Smile at you.
She will be like the one to see it all
But not from the position on the wall
What lies behind that mysterious smile?
The one I will paint with a tint of red
While you keep on your travels
And wherever you lie,
Is where you will make your bed?
You will be the one to see it all,
But not from the position on the wall
I will paint my Mona Lisa’s hands
With a brush of flesh
Filled with creases and fine lines
Ones you stay still in awe to be able to study for a while
The details, the hands that show hard work,
Will be well defined.
She will be the one that has seen it all
But not from the position on the wall
I am going to capture the way she moves,
The way she smiles, her laughter her every breath
I will paint and capture with delicate strokes
All of these qualities as she rests.
She will see it all
But not in the position on the wall
I have painted her not only beautiful
But with love that emanates from her soul
Like a playful, bubbling, laughing spring
With that smile that comes from a restful slumber
That all who admires her portrait will also want to sing.
Yes, she will be the one that has seen it all
But not from the position on the wall
I have painted my Mona Lisa
Portrait in a rocking chair, standing pretty on the stairs,
Or in the restful slumber in her bed
Carelessly showing her aged tell tale hands
For all to see
And that beautiful silvery colors of hair on her head.
We will see you’re inner deep, your all
But not in the position on the wall
My Mona Lisa, my Auntie Titi Dolly
You are a portrait in my memory
Eternal in my paint brushes of my mind
With your eyes, your laughter, your heart,
My paintbrush has captured immortality,
It has captured time.
Michael Angelo wouldn’t have done you justice
Not even Da Vinci, even if he wanted to
For I have painted my perfect Mona Lisa
With the perfect brushes of hues.
Titi Dolly, my masterpiece
We have seen your all
You are not a portrait on a wall
I have painted you, I have painted us
For you are combinations of us all

You are combinations of your daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren, your brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces. We all love you, your niece and your daughter Isa.

I Am Going To Paint Me a Mona Lisa by

My Aunt

My aunt is still just as beautiful and lovely as the first time I ever met eyes on her. I guess when I was born. She lives in PuertoRico and is a Puerto Rican all of the way. She loves to eat, especially fruits and mangoes which are favorite ones.

This poem was inspired by the photo my cousin Isa Rodriguez took of her mother, my aunt, whom I adore as a second mother for her love and generosity and who never favored her daughters over me. I was always treated as her own child, not a niece. Besides taking naps, her other favorite past time is eating, especially fruit. She always has a smile on her face though her hands have labored to make ends meet and made sure her daughters had a good education. To my Eternal Mona Lisa. May God keep on blessing you and don’t ever lose that smile.
