What is Puerto Rico?

This is the translation of “Que es Puerto Rico?” which was posted earlier in Spanish. One of my daughters wrote this one and asked if I could post in RB. In translating, I tried to be true with the poem, trying not to change it’s meaning and leave as many words possible that are in the Spanish version. In Spanish, the poem rhymes but I couldn’t do it with this one because like I said, it is my daughter’s poem and changing the words, would make it mine, not her’s. So enjoy. Hope it is to your liking, though in Spanish, you could really feel her sentiment over her love for Puerto Rico. Another thing I might add is that Puerto Rico is also called “The Island of Enchantment”
I have to give my very special thanks to my wonderful friend Shoaib, who, out of the kindness of his heart, let me have this beautiful foto of his of Puerto Rico taken from the sky so that everyone could see a bit of the island. Of course, this is where the city is, but if you start traveling, you will see the beautiful sea, the mountains, the rain forrest called El Yunque, the caves and other beautiful sites that are here. Once again, from my heart, thanks Shoaib.

the paradise we dream of
prejudice it does not tolerate
and with it’s always sunny climate
I am proud to say
that it is Puerto Rico I love.
The ocean is brilliant and full of foam
and green is the color of it’s mountains and valleys.
The sky is always so bright
and it’s springs and autumns are
all such beauties.
If to others places you have gone
and isolated you see the island from a distance
it is a feeling that from family you are being pulled apart
when you see the countrysides tasting us ever so radiant
This is my Puerto Rico, land of enchantment.
What would I give to be wind to be able to caress you
or the beautiful sea to be able to kiss you
to be the covers of the land to be able to cover you
even though I am not mother nature to be able to hold you
but I am a pure puertorican to be able to love you.

I’m glad you liked Puerto Rico and that you found it beautiful. Yes, most of the women are beautiful, but you can say that for every country. Now, if you got to see my daughters.!!! Don’t want to brag, but people keep telling me they are beautiful. Iris

I’m so glad you liked it. It is the way my daughter felt at the time she wrote it. She still loves Puerto Rico, but made her home in Florida, USA. xox Iris

Beautiful, heartfelt words, I’ve never been there…but after reading this you’ve made me want to go;)
happyfeet5 replied
Thanks Shanina. It is beautiful if you like mountains, rainforrests and beaches. But if you make the trip, make sure you take along a lot of sunscreen and a hat especially in the summer time. It is always warm but in the summer it could be suffocating because since it is a tropical place, it is also very humid. Glad you like the poem. Will call my daughter up and tell her. Iris

Lovely poem…your daughter must have a natural talent for writing. How old is your daughter? Please tell her how much I have enjoyed reading her poem please.

Thank you very much for reading and for liking it. Right now my daughter is 29 but she wrote it when she was about 16, 17 or 18. I really don’t remember. Would have to call her and ask. I really appreciate your lovely words and they are very much appreciated. Iris

I’m glad you translated it as well. I do find it charming in Spanish and of course it’s still lovely in English.
happyfeet5 replied
Thank you very much Cassidy. I did the translation for the ones that didn’t understand it. I thought it was not fair to them to have me post it out in Spanish and for them to try to figure out what was being said. Thanks again, Iris. I took a little time, and peeking in a little because as I said my husband is on vacation so I have to dedicate some time with him. Iris

yay !!!! glad you got the picture up !!!! <3>

Thanks Iris, yes why isn’t your daughter on this site? She should put a few more poems on here. Lovely words : )
happyfeet5
I’ve told her about the site. She is very happy for me to be on it, but even though she is a great writer, I think she is better than me, she is very busy with her work. She has to get up very early and comes out late. I’m sure if she gets hooked like I am, she won’t be able to go to work. lol Iris P.S. I told her that if she comes out with more, or finds other old ones, to please send them over.

I think your daughter needs to work for the Peurto Rican Tourism Board….lol…I have officially placed your beautiful island on one the destinations I need to visit before I die.

Glad to hear you are back. And yes, it is lovely. I think she writes better than I. Maybe it could be different styles. Anyway, she has a bachelors degree in marketing. So you could imagine what she could do to sell Puerto Rico to the world. lol And if you come, please, a lot of sunblock and a hat. A must. A fan if in August. Of course, the hotels have ACs. But outside, it could really be very humid and hot!!! Thanks Iris

Hi, Isa. Sorry I took so long to answer. Grisel was up here for about 4 days. She left today for San Juan and will be leaving to Orlando on Friday. Well, I did post the original in spanish ,”Que Es Puerto Rico?” and it is in #1 A Puerto Rico Photography.” I would like to take one of your photos to put it up in the Spanish one if it is alright with you. Oh, and Shoaib is not puertoro, and he doesnt’ know any Spanish, but he sure looks like one. Wish there were more of him in our island. He is one of a kind. If you can’t find it in Spanish, let me know. Iris Oh, and thanks for the offer in translating. If I do come into a fix, of course, I’ll be looking for you, as I always have with the rest of the things in the computer. And thanks, Iris

Thank you very much for liking this poem. My daughter Frances wrote it when she was much younger in Spanish and I translated it into English. It doesn’t really rhyme like hers, but then if I made it to rhyme I would have to change the words around and it wouldn’t be her poem, it would be mine. So, I practically left it the way she wrote it. Thanks for commenting and stopping by. I really appreciate it. Iris
