Que es Puerto Rico?

Es la isla del encanto
Es la isla del paraíso soñado
Del prejuicio esta aíslado
y su clima siempre es soleado.
Con orgullo es mi Puerto Rico amado.

El mar es brillante y espumoso
sus valles y montañas son verdosos.
el cielo siempre esta luminoso,
y sus otoños y primaveras son preciosos.

Si a otros sitios te has marchado,

Blanco, Negro, Indio, tres razas unidas,

What is Puerto Rico?

It is the island of enchantment
the paradise we dream of
prejudice it does not tolerate
and with it’s always sunny climate
I am proud to say
that it is Puerto Rico I love.

The ocean is brilliant and full of foam
and green is the color of it’s mountains and valleys.
The sky is always so bright
and it’s springs and autumns are
all such beauties.

If to others places you have gone
and isolated you see the island from a distance
it is a feeling that from family you are being pulled apart
when you see the countrysides tasting us ever so radiant
This is my Puerto Rico, land of enchantment.

What would I give to be wind to be able to caress you
or the beautiful sea to be able to kiss you
to be the covers of the land to be able to cover you
even though I am not mother nature to be able to hold you
but I am a pure puertorican to be able to love you.

Black, White, Indian, three races united

When I feel alone nature is my friend
seeing how the children have fun
and hearing the songs of the swallows.

The same expression that Christopher Columbus gave
is the same one that I feel
“How beautfiul is your fruit and flower garden
there is no comparism!”

To be honest with you, it was my middle daughter, Frances, who wrote this poem since she was born in Puerto Rico and this was her sentiment. She is now living in Florida and I am still in Puerto Rico. She asked if I could post it for her. . She has her style of writing and I have mine since I am a newyorican. Hope you enjoy. The translation in English is below.

Iris

My passion is writing and books. My goal is learning to draw and I’ve developed a taste for photography.

(I hope I said that correctly.)

  • Sí, lo hiciste perfecto. I’m glad you decided to read it and comment and of course, be able to understand it. I’m so glad you liked it. I think my daughter writes much more beautiful than I do. But others have said that I do. I guess it has to do more with the writing style. Thanks once again, Cassidy. Iris

Now..what is the difference between a puertorican and a newyrican style of writing?-That has sounded funny for me….though I may grasp it…he, he, …..The poem is really beautiful Frances…and it fits so much in this group…IBEROAMERICAN COLORS. Wonderful
    Rosa

  • Thank you so much Rosa for considering Frances in the Iberoamerican Colors. I can’t wait to tell her. As for what is the difference between a Puertorican and a Newrican style of writing? Tehehehe, That is just my vocabulary. Maybe I invented it. But let me explain what I mean and as you have the soul of a poet you will perfectly understand. My way of thinking is that Frances and I are the same because we both write and have a funny, humoristic side to us yet we also have a haunting soul. We both speak of how we feel but she was born and raised in Puerto Rico so she has studied in a culture that speaks Spanish in school and English as a secondary language though we are citizens of the U.S. She learned her Spanish at home and in school and her English at home with the history of Puerto Rico and Spain. I, on the other hand, was born in New York from Puerto Rican parents learning my English in school and Spanish at home though I started to grasp English as if it were my maternal language. I learned only English history and American history. Frances breathes Puerto Rico and I breath two different cultures. It is funny though, I think that my best poetry is the ones I wrote in Spanish. Spanish is the language of romance and I find it so beautiful and with more passion. Well, that I have to give credit to my Spanish ancestors. Frances says that my poetry is the best yet I find hers to be more beautiful than mine. Ay Rosa, me he puesto un poco soñadora, no?
    Hugs,
    Abrazos
    Iris.
