PLEASE READ.... IT IS WORTH IT!!!!! by Iris  R

Posted on November 06, 2010

I was just now reading my emails and I have found the most beautiful message. It is about a patient who was in a hurry to have his wound looked at. This I had to share and plese feel free to copy and send to others. I almost shed a tear.

It was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80’s
arrived to have stitches removed from his thumb. He said he was in a
hurry as he had an appointment at 9:00 am.

I took his vital signs and had him take a seat, knowing it would be
over an hour before someone would to able to see him. I saw him
looking at his watch and decided, since I was not busy with another
patient, I would evaluate his wound. On exam, it was
well healed, so I talked to one of the doctors, got the needed supplies to
remove his sutures and redress his wound.

While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctor’s
appointment this morning, as he was in such a hurry.

The gentleman told me no, that he needed to go to
the nursing home to eat breakfast with his wife. I inquired as to her health.

He told me that she had been there
for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease.

As we talked, I asked if she would be upset if he was a bit late.

He replied that she no longer knew who he
was, that she had not recognized him in
five years now.

I was surprised, and asked him, ‘And you still go every
morning, even though she doesn’t know who you are?’

He smiled as he patted my hand and said,

‘She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is.’

I had to hold back tears as he left, I had goose bumps on my arm, and thought,

‘That is the kind of love I want in my life.’

True love is neither physical, nor romantic.

True love is an acceptance of all that is, has been, will be, and will not be.

With all the jokes and fun that are in e-mails, sometimes there is one
that comes along that has an important message.. This one I thought I
could share with you.

The happiest people don’t necessarily
have the best of everything; they just make
the best of everything they have.

I hope you share this with someone you care about. I just did.

‘Life
isn’t about
how to survive the storm,

But how to dance in
the
rain.’

He still has that feeling he had when first he saw her.

Love is when you first meet your heart misses a beat,
Love is when being together your heart is stronger,
Love is not just accepting your partners’ faults.
Love is your partner does not have faults,
Love is missing your love whilst you’re apart,
Love is the ache until your *not
    apart,
Love is not what your love can do for you,
Love is what you can do for each other,
Love is not being possessive of your love,
Love is the freedom given by not being possessive,
Love is an act of marriage between two loves,
    Let no persons put asunder*.

    Sherri Nic...

Iris, what beautiful writing..alzhiemers disease has got to be one of the worst deseases around. I have seen personally and it breaks your heart to see someone who was a cheery sweet indiviual and the sadness of the family is monsterous..To see your loved one everyday like this dear man is so wonderful to see ..there was a wonderful movie about alsheimers..It was called the note..There is no doubt about the tears that you had..I just joined in tears with you, but mainly happiness that one loves someone so much till the very last minute!!
Thank you Iris for sharing such a sad but lovely story about love!!!
    Sherri:):)

  • Iris R:

Oh Sherri, thank you. I have seen also the terrible effects this decease has, not only on the person, but on the family. When they momenentarily come back and remember you it is so much joy, a little bit of hope, thinking he or she is back and then the sadness you face when he or she gets lost again. I never wanted to see the movie for they told me it was sad and then I caught it about half way one day and it really brought tears to my eyes.
    Thanks Sherri

  • Sherri Nicholas

    Sherri Nic...

    Sherri:):)

  • Iris R:

    I’m so sorry Sherri,
I didn’t see this comment. Oh, yes the entire movie was so heartbreaking and the last part where they both passed away together had me all in tears.
    God Bless and much love

Isn’t it Sandy? If we were able to love or be loved this way. I’m so sure that if it were in his hands he would not have her in the nursing home, but would be taking care of her himself.
