I was busy all day doing something I don’t usually do: draw and paint a figure, a portrait… H pencil on Daler Rowney paper, 300gsm. I also used my Parker pen. Edit in Picasa: sepia to give it an “older” look. This is how the younger woman looks! Somewhere in Africa….

My friend’s Afrikaans Poem:

Portret

’n Vrou sit aan tafel
in die kombuis
van ’n ou plaashuis…
betas die tafeldoek wat uitrafel
terwyl sy die niet instaar.

Haar kop is sywaarts gedraai,
haar nek ’n gespanne boog,
haar gesig weerspieël
’n diepe stilte;
geduld;
lydsaam ingegrif
met net ’n floue afskynsel
van vervloë drif,
maar ook iets anders:
volharding;
deursettingsvermoë;
absolute berusting;
met net ’n dowwe plooi van spyt
oor jare se verkwisting.

’n Vrou sit aan tafel
in die kombuis
van ’n ou plaashuis…
bevoel haar lewe wat uitrafel
terwyl sy die ewigheid instaar
