The Blyde River Canyon is 16 km long starting at “Bourke’s Luck Potholes” and ending at the “Three Rondavels”. Its cliffs rise between 600m-800m from the river bed. The ‘Three Rondavels viewpoint’ (also called ‘The Three Sisters’) is around 1380m above sea level while the level of the Blyde dam when full is 665m above sea level.

At the ‘Three Rondavels viewpoint’ is an unforgettable view of three huge rock spirals rising out of the far wall of the Blyde River Canyon. Their tops appear to have a hut-like rounded roof. A rondavel is a traditional African style house, so that’s why they call these three spectacular peaks as “Three Rondavels”.

The Three Rondavels were known as ‘The Chief and his three wives’. The flat-topped peak to the right is named Mapjaneng – the ‘Chief’ (named in honor of a Mapulana chief named Maripe Mashile who routed invading Swazis at a great battle). Behind them all towering in isolated and massive splendor is the 1944m high peak named Mariepskop.
