Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time. ~John Lubbock
favourite poem by Douglas Stewart
To lie on the grass and watch,
Amused and indifferent,
The fever that drives the ant
To nowhere that matters much;
To lie on the grass with the moths
While, spry with the thought of murder,
Goes scurrying by the spider
Speckled and muttering oaths;
To lie on the grass in a dream
Where nothing will start or stir
But the grasshopper splashing the air
With a flicker of yellow flame;
Oh, to be half asleep
In the peace of the sunlit pasture
Is to lie like a lion at leisure
Where the little kingdoms creep,
And suddenly to be confused
By a prickle of spine and hair
And a notion of eyes in the air
Indifferent and amused.
Oil on canvas. The original is framed and in my child, Marethes’ house.
Love is to the heart what the summer is to the farmer’s year – it brings to harvest all the loveliest flowers of the soul. ~Author Unknown
Dis Oktober en somer in Suid-Afrika! Elke dag is ’n fees van kleure: groen en blou en geel! Voëls fluit en die son skyn warm op ons kaal arms. Dis heerlik om te lewe!
Were the summers of my childhood
always like this…
was the sky always so blue,
bending to kiss
the land so green.
Did the golden sun always tease the earth,
persuading her to give birth
to her bounty of seeds,
weaving a multicoloured carpet of delight.
Was the smell of grass
crushed beneath my little feet,
combined with the scents of the flowers
always so heady
that it is transported down the years
in my memory.
If a picture paints a thousand words
then this one to me
paints my memories of a childhood,
of sights and sounds and smells
rekindled in its beauty,
nothing is withheld.
Thanks dear Alma!
