The Crested Barbet (Trachyphonus vaillantii) (‘trachys’=rough, ‘phone’=voice, sound’) is a sub-Saharan bird in the Lybiidae family. (Wikipedia) Wandering in the bushveld near Brits, (South Africa) I suddenly came across this lovely bird. At home in Bronkhorstspruit I only hear them and almost never see them! The trilling call of the Crested Barbet has been likened to an alarm clock and has been known to serve the same purpose on many an early morning!
