During the 1988 version of the Paris Dakar rally I did take this shot of the X1 while passing the dunes in the middle of the Tenere desert. The sound of the truck passing at high speed is a unforgetable experience of might and power.
This vehicle was fitted with two engines and had a total of 1.280 bhp and with a weight of only 10.7 tons a did accellerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8,8 seconds. Top speed? A rough 230 km/p.h.
The two competion DAF trucks, the X1 and the X2, were so fast that they did outrun the top section of the cars without any problem.
It was withdrawn from the rally after the terrible crash of the X2, the second truck of DAF in competition. That truck rolled six times at a speed of and estimated 160 km p/h, killing the co driver and wounding the driver and meccanic heavely.
For those interested in the photographic details: It was taken with a Nikon F3 on Fuji Velvia using a 80-200mm 2.8 Nikkor lens.
