The Camp - Bonegilla by

On a recent trip I re-visited the immigration camp at Bonegilla, which now is a memorial to over 300 000 migrants who arrived in Australia between 1947 and 1971 and this is where it all began for me in June 1955.

Like this, in the sun, taken with a good camera, they don’t look as awful as they are, in my memory, based on the two little photos I have of our friends, the van Hoorns and us sitting outside our cabins, in May, 1956, taken with a little box camera. Brings back memories of the P.A. system (Sounding like M.A.S.H.) of needing to go to the ablution blocks, in the night to go to the toilet. Of the food I couldn’t eat. Life got so much better after this, and the next three hostels!!

  • Thank you MrJoop, guess life has changed for the better for all of us since

I hope, you’ll take a look at my impressions of those times, here.

I am so pleased that you have shown us these pictures. ( I knew about the ‘museum’. Had to pass it by, 10 years ago. I must go and have a look and lay those ghosts!

  • Thank you Ozcloggie for your comment, had a look at your impressions from that time shame I have no photos but in those days I guess it was normal and we accepted it
