PIG FACE...(Carpobrotus glaucescens.) by

Carpobrotus rossii (Pig Face)
This is a useful plant. Not only is it useful and decorative in the garden, it is one of the bush tucker plants used by the local Aboriginal group. The leaves and fruits were used as a kind of relish to be eaten with meat. The juice from the leaves is also said to be an insect repellent. As with any new thing, a cautious test should be done before slathering one’s skin with the juice of an unknown plant.
I guess the same could be said for the plants in the Aloe family. Aloe Vera is good on a number of skin ailments but I am never sure which member of the species is the one to use.

ROFL, Hans, very cute. This is an ice plant- it stores water in its leaves and stems, and it has a natural anti-freeze that tolerates light freezes. They keep the sides of the freeways from blowing or washing away with these.

  • Thank you so very much, Dayonda much appreciated

    G’day Hans,

This is a very good find and you have composed/arranged the flower in a great setting. Nestled in its rocky frame it stands out very well indeed.
Your good exposure, made in equally good light, has controlled the highlights and contrast very well.
Your focus is nice and crisp and the colours and beautifully bright and natural.

I could be wrong but I am sure this wildflower is of the species Carpobrotus glaucescens. Take a look here if you wish to see what you think. 8-)
