Fairhope Jubilee

Fairhope Jubilee

A little about a Jubilee:
Jubilee is the name used locally for a natural phenomenon that occurs sporadically on the shores of Mobile Bay, a large body of water on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. During a jubilee many species of crab and shrimp, as well as flounder, eels, and other demersal fish will leave deeper waters and swarm—in large numbers and very high density—in a specific, shallower coastal area of the bay. A jubilee is a celebrated event in Mobile Bay, and it attracts large crowds, many drawn by the promise of abundant and easy-to-catch seafood. This is apparently the only place in the world it occurs and when we have a Jubilee a lot of people take buckets to the beach and just pick up all they can. It usually happens late at night or early morning and people that live next to the water check all night to see when it happens then start calling friends, word gets out pretty fast.

    This image glows with joy.
We have a near similar phenomenon at Durban beaches in South Africa. Every winter great schools of pilchards swim up the coast and are driven to the beach by predators. People even scoop them up with their hats. It is a great occasion everyone looks forward to.
