Mesa Arch Early Morning Canyonlands UT

I can see why this is such a popular vista to photograph, but it presents some technical difficulties. There’s framing, and what to include (exclude). Then there’s the challenge of the early morning light and holding all the values together. At the printing stage the ‘scene’ has only about a two stop depth (beyond the arch) so the values require some delicate treatment. My problem was keeping the sun from ‘interfering’ with the scene. I waited until it was about 2/3 the way up the arch before tripping the shutter. Anyway…........

The camera was the Mamiya RZ67 II w/65mm wide angle lens with a No.25 red filter attached. The settings were f22 @ 1 sec using Ilford’s Pan-f Plus film rated at ISO-50 and developed in Gordon Hutching’s PMK 1:2:100 compensating developer.

Thank you for your encouraging comments. The film work is now processed via Photoshop CS3 and since ‘06 I’ve gone digital/digital. For this shot I was able to camp within a short distance of the site, so that made it convenient.
