I am Scientist (my day job) as well as a freelance cartoonist (my night job). As a scientist, your promotions often rely on you writing scientific papers, have them peer-reviewed and published in scientific journals or conferences. But the measure of success is also to have other researchers citing your papers as a reference. This is my take on it… Just a bit of fun to draw…
I have a friend who is in the final year of doing her research PHD.. Poor bugger she is struggling to finish in between trying to live and work. I know how you feel! She is lucky to have had some of her research published though!
OK, to answer the question about my field of expertise: I have a PhD in Physics and work now as an Antenna Specialist at BAE Systems Australia after 16 years at the CSIRO (The Australian Governement research organization). I work on what people call “antenna dishes”, basically, bigger and more efficient satellite dishes (a bit like the small ones on your roof). I have published over 100 research papers and one book chapter on my field of expertise… For the Australians amongst you, I have worked on the Parkes radio telescope (a 64mdiameter parabolic reflector at Parkes) and on the Australia Telescope (an array of 6 22m-diameter antennas at Narrabri).
Wonderful Hagen : ) So..you’re not just a pretty face then! ; ) A few years back we visited the Telescope in Canberra..as my daughter Sarah was in a gifted childrens programme, and spent a long weekend doing some pretty amazing things, that normally children would never get the opportunity to do. Sadly when the fires went through Canberra most of what we had seen was no more. But we do have some terrific memories. : ) I really enjoyed watching “The dish”,though have never been to Parkes. warm wishes, Wendy
