Please cite my papers
I am Scientist (my day job) as well as a freelance cartoonist (my night job). As a scientist, your promotions often rely on you writing scientific papers, have them peer-reviewed and published in scientific journals or conferences. But the measure of success is also to have other researchers citing your papers as a reference. This is my take on it…
Just a bit of fun to draw…

I have a friend who is in the final year of doing her research PHD.. Poor bugger she is struggling to finish in between trying to live and work. I know how you feel! She is lucky to have had some of her research published though!

The drawing it GREAT.. Wonderful work :))

Very cute Hagen : ) Scientist / Cartoonist….Hmm… that would look interesting on a resume : ) What is your field of expertise? Wen x
Rosalie Scanlon
So funny….is this you??? LOL
frozenfa
oh dear.. .hehe.. am interested too, what’s your field of expertise for science?? =D
elisab
So neat!!
Hagen
OK, to answer the question about my field of expertise: I have a PhD in Physics and work now as an Antenna Specialist at BAE Systems Australia after 16 years at the CSIRO (The Australian Governement research organization). I work on what people call “antenna dishes”, basically, bigger and more efficient satellite dishes (a bit like the small ones on your roof). I have published over 100 research papers and one book chapter on my field of expertise… For the Australians amongst you, I have worked on the Parkes radio telescope (a 64mdiameter parabolic reflector at Parkes) and on the Australia Telescope (an array of 6 22m-diameter antennas at Narrabri).

Wonderful Hagen : ) So..you’re not just a pretty face then! ; ) A few years back we visited the Telescope in Canberra..as my daughter Sarah was in a gifted childrens programme, and spent a long weekend doing some pretty amazing things, that normally children would never get the opportunity to do. Sadly when the fires went through Canberra most of what we had seen was no more. But we do have some terrific memories. : ) I really enjoyed watching “The dish”,though have never been to Parkes. warm wishes, Wendy

Robert Elliott
hehe behind every great scientist there is great cartoonist, love it
Hagen replied
Thanks Robert…
Kate Purdy
Great sense of humor, too bad the ring of truth is the fact that even good science needs to be popular or it remains obscured.
Hagen replied
Tell me about it… Getting money for Research & Development is very difficult… The problem is that people giving you “Research Money” expect a huge return on their investment, but like Albert Einstein said: “If we knew what we were doing, it would not be called research…”
Thanks for dropping by :)
Stephanie Rach...
lmao, love it!

I love your art.

Love it Hagen and as somebody who worked in research I know exactly what you mean. As one of the owners of a big mining company once said that is the economists and accountants had been around 40 years ago none of the big mining projects would have happened. They want a return in 2 years and don’t have any vision.
Hagen replied
Hey Peter… On a project I worked on, we were asked by the bean-counters to draw a business plan with “Science breakthroughs” scheduled and a marketable project within 6 months… They could not see the problem in that request…
Peter Hammer
OK so go back and ask those bean counters what they did with their superannuation money a year ago and also which fund is going to give you the highest return over the next 5 years. When they tell you that they can’t answer that question ask them why are you different and you’ll tell them the answer to their question when they give you an answer to your question. And of course their answer they are absolutely committed to else they have to make up the money you lost by following their advice. If they can’t answer you then just make up anything and if it doesn’t work out well it is no worse than their predictions. The world would be a much better place if we didn’t have bean counters and economists and let engineers run everything:-)
