I remember Mount Whitney from the travels of my youth. It was a destination that my Father along with me (and my invited friends) would trek to along the U.S. 395. The peaks are huge monuments that became etched in my memories. I still have a great excitement that comes over me at the thought of getting up early and making the drive. We took this particular trip in December of 2010. The roads were snowed over and we could only reach the foot of the portal road. But that 14,505 foot peak lingering in the backdrop still puts a chill up my spine! © All Copyrights reserved by Glenn McCarthy 2011.
The John Muir Trail starts here and runs through to Yosemite, some 210 miles in length. Muir, the renown naturalist, almost died in his first attempt to make the summit after getting caught in the area at nightfall, and unprepared for an overnight stay. Had to dance a jig all night to keep his blood flowing. Mount Whitney is found in the Sequoia National Park.
