Actually I think I do like this version more, but the difference is very subtle. Personally there are a few steps I take with almost all my flower shots; firstly I use auto levels in PS (which removes any haze from the image), then I usually increase the color saturation about 30% (or as much as I can get away with before the photo looks unnatural or the editing becomes obvious); then decrease the brightness about 10 and increase the contrast between 10 and 30. This brings out the colors even more and makes everything appear brighter. You could try some of these things with this photo although because the subject is mainly white it might not be so effective. The only other thing I would mention is that it is usually not a good idea to centre the subject in a photo; although it can work on occasions, it’s usually better to try to stick to the rule of thirds. Wow, thanks heaps for the detailed description. I’m definitely going to try this out! With regards to centering the object, I felt the surrounding grass was distracting and cropped this way to avoid this. I think I will head back and try again next sunny day with your tips (and a couple of others) in mind.
