Rockhampton, Queensland, is known as ‘The Beef Capital of Australia’.
At each entrance to the City, and at strategic locations about town, there are commissioned sculptures of the various breeds that are produced around Central Queensland.
Ten kilometres from town at Gracemere , near our place , is the Southern Hemisphere’s largest cattle saleyards . The saleyards host not only Australia’s largest Horse sale (The National Quarter Horse Sale ), but also the world’s largest stud cattle sale (Brahman Week ).
Every couple of years the City hosts a Beef Expo to promote the region and the industry that supports it.
Back in the beginning, a competition was started to get businesses and organisations involved that might otherwise not be interested in this expo.
What started as a small thing; getting businesses and institutions to create something around a bull based on their trade, has grown in leaps and bounds.
Nearly every business in Rocky has a bull. The removalists have a ‘remove-a-bull’. The scrap metal dealer has a ‘recycle-a-bull’. Even the local garden supply place had one for a while called ‘Bull-S#$@’! It is all a bit of a joke really. We even make National news .
This one belongs to Central Queensland University.
As I get the chance, I’ll add to this lot of bull so that I eventually document all the bull(s) in town.
