This old girl was obviously the matriarch of the group of elephants (Loxodonta Africana) feeding on an island in the Chobe River in the Chobe National Park, Botswana.

Largest living land mammal and in this case probably one of the oldest still alive. Not many people know that it is always a female or matriarch leading the group of female and their offspring only visited by mature males. The old bulls are most often solitary.
    Beautiful photography Graeme & Margaret.

Awesome features and an incredible photo Graeme. I never made it to Botswana but have seen many other parts of eastern and southern Africa. This brings back all sorts of wonderful memories for me. Thank you for that :D

  • Thanks Neil. Chobe was a great viewing area with the boats allowing you to get in close to these animals while they are feeding. This was late afternoon with the sun on the very aged face. Recommend Chobe and Etosha in Namibia if you get the opportunity.
