Trying something new again – this time a further development of my minimalist experiment with Dave’s portrait a couple of weeks ago. It didn’t start as a poster – originally I was just applying various filters to a photograph of an oriental statue I found in a Toronto museum – cutout, fractalius etc. When I started adding the curlicues selectively to the hair I started to notice a slightly “art nouveau” feel, which coupled with the emerging cruel look on the statues face put me in mind of the monstrous Turandot. As I say – just an experiment – but I’m fairly pleased with the result.
I have to say that, whilst I have seen some splendid productions of Turandot in my time, I have no sympathy with either of the protagonists, both of whom are egotists on the grandest scale (and, quite frankly, are made for each other). Turandot slaughters her suitors for having the presumption to consider themselves worthy of her, whilst Calaf allows his adoring and loyal maid to be tortured to death to protect his own secret. Such charmers!
