Ness, Isle of Lewis - White Horses
The best way to appreciate this image is to click play on the above YouTube clip, click View Large and sit back to enjoy!
Always spectular at this spot on the most northerly point of Isle of Lewis where the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea meet. The waves that come into these weather-beaten cliffs can truly awesome.
The waves in this image are around 50 feet high and lap the top of the cliffs in places. It was truly a remarkable site that you almost see the White Horses running through the waters.

This definitely has Wow factor
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks JD,
The scene in front of me at the time was certainly “Wow!”. Not sure if that was because it was sooooo cold or the force of the waves coming in! Thanks for the comment!

There are a lot of reasons for WOW in this scene, the mist from the power ov the waves, the power of the waves themselves, the apparent wind , the high contrast, the time exposure, the rocky shore! All of these combine to make a super WOW!
Jim DeMore
Breathtaking shot Kevin. B&W can be so expressive, I don’t believe too many people take the time to utilize this medium. I wish more would. Great work on all you B&W. Submit more!
jimd
Kevin Skinner replied

outstanding shot!! wow!! i love those waves, and this rocks in BW
Kevin Skinner replied

Still one of my favourites. The waves are immense and really don’t show the actual size of these beauties coming in.
Generous compliments as usual…...keep them coming!!!!! :-)

Awesome, what power..

Very difficult to communicate the view here on the day. The power of the waves coming in was spectacular and was even more difficult to keep myself from being blown away by the wind! Thanks for stopping by and commenting – really appreciate it!

Barbara Brown
This is absolutely lovely Kevin!!
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Barbara!
Truly an awe-inspiring sight. Not sure whether it was the scene that took my breath away or the biting cold wind though!
Mark Hughes
Powerful and dramatic, well captured indeed!

AJM Photography
Hard to imagine the scale of this, but those waves look massive. Wonderfully atmospheric in B&W.
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks John,
The telephoto lens did compress the scene a bit but being there was immense! These waves were spectacular and seemed to dwarf the cliffs that they were crashing against. Simply breathtaking. Glad you appreciate my wee B&W effort :-)
Garth Smith
Brilliant shot Kevin, great light, great composition.
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Garth,
Wonderful compliment on this one! It was one of those stormy days where patches of light intermittently broke through. The B&W enhances this, I think. Glad you like it.
Kasia-D
It’s an amazing place and you captured the atmosphere tremendously well. I hope you and your camera stayed safe and dry!
Kevin Skinner replied
Hi Kasia,
Glad it translated well and even better from someone who has been there as well! As far as keeping safe, both camera and me survived – far from fry though :-)
Roz McQuillan
Stunning shot, Kevin!
Kevin Skinner replied
Hi Roz,
Really nice compliment to come home from work to! Lovely :-)
Donald Cameron
Spectactular location, I don’t think I’ve seen anything like this before. You’re so lucky to have been there to capture it so well.
Kevin Skinner replied
Hi Donald,
The Rubha Robhanais is one of those locations that I would travel from anywhere to just be. It changes dramatically with the weather and has such a feel to it. This was taken when I first started photography and initially sparked my B&W obsession. Quite poignantly, this was taken on Christmas Day, 2004 and the next day tsuami hit the Indian Ocean. Always reminders me of it.
Asoka
I’d always thought that this effect was artistic fiction until I saw this shot. —SPECTACULARLY CAPTURED!!!!! (And I’ve never given FIVE exclamation points before!)
Kevin Skinner replied
Hi Asoka,
Don’t think I’ve received five exclamation marks before either :
D Have to say, it was a powerful sight and one of those times that makes you glad that photography is in your life. Thanks so much for commenting with exclamation marks ;)Asoka
( P.S. You don’t have a color version of this, do you?)
Kevin Skinner replied
No. This scene was quite mono anyway. Even the as the sun broken through, it was the bright whiteish sort of light rather giving a yellowish hue. Could have Photoshop’ed it but that would be not staying true to view (question: is converting B&W being “true to the view”? :-S )
Asoka
Kevin
- Screw “true to the view”! At my age I’ve become far less precious about such things.
- Just give me a photo that makes my heart SING!! (And if that means tinting it PURPLE, so be it!)Andrew Ness
Just stunning. Makes Ness look bonnie
Kevin Skinner replied
Cheers Andrew,
It was a stunning view. Like the “Ness” comment :-)
Andrew Ness
Heh, believe it or not I wasn’t talking about me I was actually on about the place Ness :) I have a couple of mates from there and have also played against Ness Football Club. It’s not that bonnie a part of Lewis (very flat and marshy and quite like the moon) but you’ve made it look great. Well done :)
Kevin Skinner replied
Hi Andrew,
I was hedging my bets with the “Ness” comment :-D I know what you mean about Port Ness though – it is the most unremarkable moorland that you really have to look hard. The coastline though is spectacular!
David Lewins
This is breathtaking, one of the best B&W images which I’ve seen for a while. Spectacular work, worthy of the Feature, congratulations.
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks David,
A really nice compliment! More than I could ask for :-) Cheers!
Pauline Black
Outstanding capture!!!!
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Pauline,
It’s an outstanding seascape along the northern coast of the Isle Of Lewis. Glad you like it enough to comment :-)
biddumy
A memorable shot. Fab. Photo!!!
Kevin Skinner replied
Cheers Biddumy,
I can still remember the waves and pressing the shutter button. Also remember how cold I was! :-)

Stephen Vecchi...
very nice – congrats on winning the B&W challenge.
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Stephen,
This one means a lot to me. Cannot tell you how much!
Linda Jackson
What a totally awesome time you had! I can almost feel the seaspray, and smell the ocean! Your b/w does it justice! Take care, Linda
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Linda,
As I’ve said before, I remember taking this capture vividly. I can still hear the roar of the waves crashing against the rocks and cliffs over the howl of the northern winds, whipping up over the high cliffs. Really appreciate how you follow my work and keep complimenting my work. It’s a great support!
Mohsen Bayramn...
love the tones and contrast of this one. excellent use of light; metering.
such a emotional work for me!
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Mohsen, my friend.
You could say that this was one of my defining images. It’s an early B&W of mine but I can remember the craft of producing it as clear as if it happen hour ago. When you see a moment like this, it starts an amazing emotional journey through the creative process where you are almost desperate to translate and share with others this wonderful sight – akin to an excited child wanting to show their mother something that they have found. It is an ineffable quality that photography holds for me at times and pulls me to make my images better (never satisfied!)
marshall calve...
so beautiful and so frightening in equal amounts, mono at it’s best
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Marshall,
Really appreciate the great compliment on this one. Thanks again!
Linda Jackson
Kevin, alterior motive at work! I get to see your part of the world from my computer! ;o) Also I really do like your b/w shots, but I guess I am just a techno color person! Take care, Linda
Kevin Skinner replied
Gosh, Linda! You must think Scotland is devoid of colour (when I was a young kid, I thought the world must have invented colour recently because all the films were B&W). Only too pleased to share the beauty of this land – very hard to beat it :-)
Linda Jackson
Kevin, you do a great job! I think Scotland must be a very magical place, and can never get enough. Good news, I got a new job, finally after a year! Bad news, I won’t be able to spend as much time on my pictures, and Redbubble.
But have to pay the bills! Keep on snapping! Take care, Linda
Mikhail Zvonkov
like it!
Kevin Skinner replied
Hi Mikhail,
Sorry for the late reply but so glad you liked it enough to leave a wee comment :-)
artyfifi

Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Fi!
Lovely compliment!
snappyexposure
Stunning work Kevin. We have pretty much the same here in Shetland, always fun and pretty scary at times.
Kevin Skinner replied
Cheers Paula,
Just love the islands. Been to Shetland loads of time but never with my camera :-( Have to put that right soon! I know what you mean about the “fun and scary” part – I remember watching the power of the waves crashing in which was awesome to witness but frightening for anyone out at sea. This was taken on Christmas Day 2004, the next day the Tsuami hit the Indian Ocean basin – it always reminds of the power of nature.
Scott d'Almeida
fabulous
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Scott,
Glad you like it!
Kimberly Daigle
What a stunning shot.
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Kimberly,
One of those moments that I was glad I had the camera with me! Was a stunning scene, even if it was freezing at the time :-)
stewarty
I dont know if iam the right person to judge your pictures But hey il give it a bash.
Your photos are great and the time and effort you have put in is unbelieveable.
Kevin Skinner replied
Thanks Stewarty,
If you can view the image, you’ve got an opinion and always pleased to hear them :-)
Just love the landscape around me and photography is a bonus to be able to capture the scene. Really appreciate the compliment and thanks for taking the time to leave a wee comment. Cheers!
Kevin Bergen 23 days ago
Can’t believe I never commented on this one! It’s so spectacular with its bright highlights in the sea foam and all the tender tones of light throughout those bombastic waves! The composition is spot on!
Kevin Skinner replied 23 days ago
Hi Kevin,
This is obviously a special wee image for me and even more so now that it has been given such a high honour in the National Competition! I can still look at this image and feel the cold winds rip up from the seas, taste the salt air and smell the fresh sea-smell. A rare capture that can do that in my experience. Thanks for the compliment!
Willowpix 23 days ago
Spectacular Kevin!! Congratulations!!! The photo itself deserves at least a dozen wee Malts. And then the competition at least several more. So I expect we’ll hear back from you (late…) in the morning!!! :D
Good for you Kevin!

) Glad I was though :)MidoriN 20 days ago
Breathtaking photograph … stumbled across this by fortunate accident in Google and just had to purchase two framed. My father grew up here and it truly is a spectacular site. You’ve captured it beautifully.
Kevin Skinner replied 20 days ago
Hi MidoriN,
Thanks so much. Just found out about the sale and I’m truly honoured you thought so much it to buy it. The seascape along this coastline is just amazing. Have taken many an image from there and down the west side of Lewis. Wonderful compliment.
Shelly Hiebert 15 days ago
Oh wow Kevin….this image gave me me goosebumps instantly! Such power and beauty captured by your amazing eye. Your b&w work is always so fabulous! And THEN I listened to Susan Boyle’s version of Wild Horses and I got goosebumps on my goosebumps and it brought a tear to my eye….wow! This just all works so perfectly together. Fabulous all around Kevin :)
Kevin Skinner replied 15 days ago
Thanks Shelly,
With a scene like this, you can’t go wrong – it does all the work. The inspiration for adding some music comes from your works, Shelley, as you know! Just thought this was a perfect match for both image and song. Thanks so much for the compliments and pointers on how to add the music.
Richard George 15 days ago
There are image that stop and arrest you…then there those jolt the senses…this is one such image…you say it is the scene but it takes the skill and keen eye of the artist to take it to the next level…you are that artist Kevin. Kudos and congratulations!
Kevin Skinner replied 12 days ago
Thanks so much Richard!
I just try to represent what I see as best as I can. Hopefully it translates to those who wish to view my wee captures. 99% landscape – 1% me and most of that is press the button :-)

My sister bought me this print and it is just beautiful; very powerful and moving. It has really captured the essense of the area. It is very aptly named and the song accompanies it wonderfully.
