Textures In The River
Canon EOS 30D
This simple scene was taken at small crook in the River Findhorn at Ardclach in the Highlands of Scotland. It is here the river sweeps around a small church and graveyard in a tiny lowland area. So low, in fact, they built the bell tower on top of a neighbouring hill so that the sound could escape over the adjacent wards.

The river is nearly always fast-flowing and can be very spectacular at flood. The way the waters interact with the shores and the odd defiant boulder has always fascinated me. I could watch for hours as the torrents ebb and flow over the granite hurdles with that wonderful, soothing sound that flowing water makes.
I decided that a series of Black & White images of different intimate river scenes would be perfect for a study. The different types of stone that you find beside or in the river can be stunning with each having their own charactistics are remarkable in themselves. Put them with a fast flowing river taken at a long-ish exposure, the textures and contrasts that can be produced are an excellent subject for a monochrome project.
In this one, the granite boulder in the foreground has been smoothed and honed over, what must be, centuries of erosion and has produced wonderful textures and patterns within it.

Kevin, you have several beautiful shots of running water and stones… they are stunning and stimulating. I read Richie Fox’s message about your work and went to take a look at your artwork… and found it excellent!! Congratulations. I also love to shoot moving water and sand in the seashore… many of my work turn out to be beige, brown color with some blue in it. After seeing your work I have felt the curiosity to see some of my work in black and white. What is it… you feel… is special to art with black and whites. One is actually taking color element out of the image; does it add dramatism? Congratulations for your artwork. Keep up your excellent work. Mariarena
Kevin Skinner replied
Hi Mariarena,
I’ve been showered with a lot of wonderful compliments from Richie post and it’s been nice to know that I have been doing something right ;-) Wonderful compliment on my portfolio so thank you again.
I have been asked several times about B&W and what is it about it? For me, it is more like art. Colour images of a classic landscape or a scene is a moment of time captured. A B&W is a wee bit more: it is a moment of time captured with my interpretation and dimension on it. By taking away the colour then using the Blacks, White and those wonderful greys in between, you can change the atmosphere, feel and drama. It is a superb medium to work with.

Just goes to show what can be achieved in monochrome by a talented processer .. superb image, Kevin
Kevin Skinner replied
Hi Karl,
Water can create some wonderful textures and B&W just seems to compliment it. Very flattered by the compliment but an image like this is so easy to get right – especially with these textures

Thanks Barbara,
It is these wee intimate scenes within the landscape that attract me so. When someone asked what I saw when I took this image, I replied, “Just some stones in a river.” It is just that but I love the textures that both he water and the granite produce – just the power of photography, I suppose :-)
Barbara Brown
