I attended Brisbane’s ANZAC Day march on friday and took a few photos.
I remember as a kid, pretty much anyone who was a returned serviceman was an older gent or lady. It’s sad to see people younger than me now returned. I’d always hoped we’d reach a point where no living generations of Australians would have experienced war.
Another thing that struck me was the reception the Vietnam vets received. Considering how badly they were treated on returning from the war, it was great to see.
A lyric from that iconic Australian song, I Was Only 19 is, “but you wouldn’t let your mates down ‘til they had you dusted off.” and while it’s a song about the Vietnam war, it’s something that’s true of every generation. And never was it more evident than seeing the proud diggers walking arm in arm, supporting their mates who couldn’t do it alone.

These are awesome shots Steve ;)...I went to Southport’s March but didn’t take a camera. Good journal :D

Thanks Helen.
The importance of the day has always been something I’ve been aware of, ever since I was a young lad. The marches are such a mixed bag of emotion too. There’s the larrikin spirit coming through, but also such fierce pride and sadness. I can’t even begin to imagine what these guys feel on the day, but I know just spectating I find it quite moving.

Steven, will you be posting these in your portfolio?

No, I don’t think I will. I wouldn’t feel right making them for sale, but I wanted to share.
