My name is Michael Hughes. I live in central Pennsylvania, USA. I have been a mechanical designer. I am now a math teacher.
I dabble in various media, mostly music,
My first camera was a Kodak Retina II, given to me by my uncle. Eventually I bought a used Canon FTB and continued to dabble. My first digital pictures were simply with my phone, which I likened to a toy camera. My editting experience had previously been with PhotoShop, on a variety of cd packaging designs. Now I use PhotoFiltre, freeware.
Quite often I am more moved by darkish, unsettling, ambiguous imagery. But I like “beautiful” things as well. Sometimes it seems only “absurdity” runs through my mind when I go out on the rare photo hunt.
Looking so forward to getting lost in the diversity of this site. Thanks for making it so easy to be a part of it.

I’ve been on a bit of RB hiatus for a couple of reasons. Firstly, going back to work after nearly a year working through a complicated dispute having, most believe, at its base, good old (bad old) nepotism. I am a math teacher and at times, through all this, I was quite deluded into thinking I could never do it again. But I got such a warm welcome back from students and staff, it felt as if…
you know, there is something very joyful in this. i have a small memory of sitting on my bed playing a little tin drum with miniature sticks. it was probably 1965 or so. / just throwing it out there to, i guess, reveal another side… / [Video]
I just read that a man who gave me so much joy with his tender voice and melodies has taken his own life. Even though I didn’t know him, I am siting here heartsick. Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse. I remember being so pleased to find interviews with him on youtube, to see him speak, his laid-back drawl. His music was inspirational to my own. Sadness. / [Video]
