Watercolour and acrylic on paper, 40 × 31 cm. Painted in 2009. I used an image of a ship from a book illustration, kept the structure of the ship, but made various changes, among which was to slightly simplify the rigging, give it different flags and put some people on board. I set this in an ocean of my own imaginings, in Table Bay, off Cape Town, where even the view of Table Mountain (which I know well from many angles) is only as I imagine it would look from that vantage point. (I am not a sailor!) The sky comes from a photo I took of the sky one day over the sea near Cape Town.
I am fascinated with the sailing ships of a bygone era, and the toughness of the men who sailed them. I also wanted to portray the happier side of sailing, not the stormy dangerous times, but the lightness of a bright day and a good breeze, when it can be a celebration to be out at sea.
