Watercolour on paper. 27 × 37 cm. 1995. At one time I was learning to play the viola, and could not resist doing many paintings of it. And there is one of my great heroes hopefully looking benignly down upon this laudable (though wishful) enterprise of mine! I eventually played this instrument well enough to receive only mild disapproval. Reminds me of that one about the definition of an English gentleman: one who can play the bagpipes, but doesn’t!
