Artist's Description

detail from a surprisingly abstract
and roughly rendered mural.
no known title or artist.
Urumqi, China, 1991.

This city was an interesting (uncomfortable? incongruous?) collision of Chinese, Uygur, Mongolian, and the various other cultures from Russia, India, etc… as it was a major destination along the Silk Road for thousands of years and still resists assimilation into modern PRC policies and culture. This mural seemed to sum it up… Islamic symbols, Communist Party stars, the bold colours and layers of Hinduism, all-seeing eyes, seemingly random numbers and tags, bleeding lines, and bared teeth. Bold indeed.
