This beautiful fossil stone was found on Greenaway, North Cornwall. The hole that you can see goes all the way through it to the back. It was caused by a Clam burrowering through the stone by either mechanical or chemical techniques. This is to give it an anchor to our seas floor. It is possibly from the Devonian period, which would make it around 400 million years old!!!
wow thats a cool specimen…… so thats how these holes form…. very interesting would never have thought a bivalve would do this……..i actually found a rock like this in the sapphire wash in central queensland recently i wonder if it was formed in the same way……….
thanks rain dog!!!!! the hole comes out at the back lower right of this stone, you can literally look straight through it!!!!!!!!!!! you should be able to tell if it looks like something has edged its way through!!!!!!!! happy stone hunting to you!!
thank you for adding this as a favourite rain dog!!!!!!!!! my partner actually found this whilst i was busy crystal hunting on one of our favourite beaches!!!!!!!!! the most romantic gift, iv ever been given, and it will be treasured forever!!!!!!!
