to make the shadows disappear

you know what it’s like in an overcrowded attic
where there are no windows and the one lone light
doesn’t work very well to dispel the shadows
where there are boxes stacked up everywhere
and unseen things are covered with sheets
and you think you hear something scurrying
in the corners and you are afraid
of what those things might be
and you sit in the only open space
and you hug your knees to your chest
and you have your eyes screwed shut
so you won’t see
and you have your hands over your ears
so you won’t hear
and you have the smell of dust and dampness
acrid in your nostrils
and you rock back and forth, back and forth
and you wonder what you have to do
to make the shadows disappear?

this had been my state of mind for all these many years
and now i want to rip the paper off the windows
i am sure must certainly be there
and i want the light and the fresh air
and i want to banish the dust hanging so heavily there
i want to line it all up, toss it away
some of it i might even want to save
i want to make sense of this horrible horrible maze
i want to watch fear and pain rise up and float away
and with each step i take into it i become less and less afraid
and now i am willing to do whatever it takes
to make the shadows disappear

it can still make me feel
white bread and average
the cloyingly mushy middle
of a brilliant girl sandwich

I feel such a force in this…a will to live…the paper rips away and for one split second blinding light and sound, the sun and orchestra’s whole power…then…. clarity. WoW

  • and we can all use a little clarity, right? thanks Ken!!
