and finally it occurred to her
she had absolutely nothing he wanted
he had held her always at arm’s length
as if she were too fragile to be touched
leave that all to the mother
he would provide food and shelter
but he would give nothing of himself to her
yet still one day he would profess confusion
when she gave nothing of herself to him
he would claim, at an advancing age,
that she had never loved him
and the irony was sharp
and needled them both
and was just a bit absurd
until she thought about it later
and finally it occurred to her
he had nothing she wanted either

I’ve dreamt dreams in my life that have stayed with me ever after and changed my ideas; they’ve gone through me and through me like wine through water, and altered the color of my mind.
Emily Bronte
The reasonable man
adapts himself to the world:
the unreasonable one
persists in trying to adapt
the world to himself.
Therefore,
all progress depends
upon the unreasonable man.
George Bernard Shaw
