The Baker by Damienne Bingham

Available to buy on…

On days when the temperature was soaring above 45C – this man bakes his bread in an alcove slightly below ground level in the wall of the Medina in Fes. I was having trouble just being conscious in this heat, I have no idea how hot it must have been for him.

Fes, Morocco. 2007.
Canon EOS 400D
Canon EF 28-135mm IS USM
f/4, 1/140s, ISO 1600

Please forgive the ‘soft focus’ due to the heavy grain – the light was very low and I’ve drawn out every scrap of it I could.

He is probably used to it and gets a chill when not around the ovens….Like your POV here…T :o)

  • I’m sure you’re right! The locals all knew to have siestas in the day and go out at night to do their business.

Did you taste the bread? Best to be enjoyed with a boiling glass of mint tea. Big time fave….thanks for staying conscient in the heat, Damienne :-) x

  • No I didn’t taste the bread but I agree about the mint tea – although we had some near accidents when the mint tea combined with swarms of bees!

Superb capture! Love the amazing colours ,the blue makes it interesting, like behind him is another world ,the fiery oven is like a tunnel to somewhere …..just my imagination : )
Aha,he looks very sweaty, extra flavour to those bread : )

  • Thanks Pat, it’s the colour that drew my attention too – that ubiquitous blue found all over Morocco and the contrast with the yellow.

Love your interpretation (except for the sweat, I don’t want to think about that!)

So glad you enjoyed this and thanks for the thoughtful comment!
