Chobe National Park, Botswana. 2009 II by

A crocodile sun-bathing on the banks of the Chobe river.

It is a common misconception that crocodiles open their mouths in a ‘smile’ like this as a show of aggression: however, this is actually the way they regulate their body temperature to keep cool. And yes, this one certainly does look like it’s smiling for the camera!

  • Thanks Marella! And yeah tell me about, although I was still only maybe 3 metres away (on a boat). My boyfriend saw this photo and said that although it was a good photo he was not happy with the idea of me being that close! haha!

Marvelous capture, excellent color, nice sharp focus. He is scary looking.

  • Thank you very much! He is scary looking, I know, but I kind of got carried away while I was photographing him, and he was actually very kind of slow and relaxed – though not sure this was the most welcoming behaviour he was showing right now!
