Often my life feels like this – like a lively, bright red thread, flying through a vast, dirty and decaying world. Sometimes it zooms about as if on some frantic search, and other times it just floats wherever the wind carries it, but always there is the sense that I don’t belong.
This is the alley behind my work. I spent an hour getting this shot set up and then looking exactly how I wanted.
To get my camera this close to the gutter I had to mount it upside down off the bottom of my tripod. I used a very small aperture to get the massive depth of field which forced a long shutter speed. The ribbon was moving in the breeze but also illuminated with close-range flash to get a crisp shot of the ribbon among the movement.
Thanks Sparrow. I took this for the Canon Photo5 competition. They provide some objects that you have to photograph, but you have to come up with your own ideas. I tried really hard to make sure each of my shots had some story to tell. I think this one is my favourite.

Well worth the effort Graham!
Thanks, Tim. Live View came in handy but I sure had sore knees after an hour of squatting.

nice perspective and foreshortening_i’m a fan of old walls_but special thanks for mad red hot line – super!
Thanks, Igor. You’re right – there’s definitely a touch of madness to the ribbon. No comment with regards to any analog in my life.
