Details (Sydney Harbour Bridge)

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is not just grand; it’s amazing. It’s one of those things where, the longer you spend studying it, the more amazing little details start to jump out at you.

I love the subtle fractal nature of the bridge. The large, repetitive crosses that form the two arches are themselves made up of many small crosses, and the large triangles that run up each side joining the arches are constructed from many triangles.

Is it on purpose?
Or just a freak of Engineering?
Either way, it’s beautiful.

    Thanks, Melissa.
I was worried that it was perhaps not inspired but just weird, so I’m relieved that someone else likes it!

I believe the repetative (or inscribed) triangles are on purpose – that is how the bridge appears to be curved – a freak of mathematics and engineering… And two arches are quite significant in that they don’t touch or cross – this differentiates the design from other similar bridges such as the Tyne Bridge in UK.

It’s all quite facinating – and your photo certainly captures the fractal quality well – good analogy too by the way!!

nicely done – as you point out, the modularity and substructures are incredible with bridges of this size

Thanks, Thomas. Finding the balance between contrast and brightness took some time.
