Secession was declared January 10, 1861, and, after less than a month, Florida became one of the founding members of the Confederacy. Although the vote to secede passed 62-7, there was a relatively large and vocal pro-Union and anti-Confederate minority in the state, an element that grew as the war progressed.

A line of soldiers of the 8th Fl. Co. C are attacked by cavalry attached to the approaching 75th Ohio volunteer infantry regiment. Civil war re-enactors gathered in Fort Pierce Florida USA to portray one of the many skirmishes carried out by northern aggressors raiding small farms and communities along the Indian River. This December docudrama is just one of the many held annually throughout America.
