Nissan borrows $1.4 billion to build a leaf

Nissan closed on a $1.4 billion federal loan that will be used to build electric vehicles and lithium-ion battery packs in Tennessee, U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu said Thursday.
A new battery plant is scheduled to open in late 2012 in Smyrna and as many as 1,300 jobs could be created when the car and battery plants are operating at full capacity, said Katherine Zachary, spokeswoman for Nissan North America, Inc.
Nissan is retooling an existing auto plant to build its five-passenger, fully electric Leaf sedan.
The facilities will have the capacity to build 150,000 electric cars and 200,000 batteries per year.
The loan, which was announced previously, is part of the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program. Congress authorized that $25 billion program as part of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.
The current administration has ramped up research spending even further.
Last year, President Barack Obama announced $2.4 billion in federal grants to develop next-generation electric vehicles and batteries.
The grants were split among nearly 50 projects in 25 states, with the biggest shares going to Indiana and Michigan to create job opportunities in the automotive industry.
“This loan, which will bring production of the Nissan Leaf to Tennessee, is a significant step in sustaining American jobs and American manufacturing,” said Scott Becker, senior vice president at Nissan North America.
Nissan’s Leafs are already being built and should be available by year’s end for about $30,000. The car debuted in Tokyo last summer.

    Veeeeeeeeeery interesting! So is the fact that Nissan is owned by Renault. I guess we’ve gotta start somewhere with reducing our dependence on oil, but the average motorist in Oz drives a car worth about 6 or 7000 dollars. So it’ll be a while before most people are driving green machines.

    Graham: hello and thanks for alerting me to this. I think Hydrogen is a much better option.
    Hydrogen can be produced by dams hydro electric electrolisis. Hydrogen in bottled form is 40 times more volitile than gasoline. Hydrogen can be easily adapted to existing combustion engines and produces zero carbon emmissions.There are vehicals now running on hydrogen bottled fuel my favorite is a 1956 packard, but the best is a bradley tank. The focus has been on cars. Trucks, buses trains and ships is where hydrogen technology should begin. Heavy vehicales move people and goods cars should come last as they only move people, whom can find alternate means of transportation. The problem with electric is weight. Imagine the batteries , the Amp hour size and weight needed to move a locomotive. Hydrogen will run in any diesel engine. Now imagine the shipping industry, ships fuel tanks could be replaced by a not very large cache of batteries just enough to start hydrogen production for the ships diesel engines to start once started these engines can produce higher volumes of hydrogen . The ship is floating in it’s fuel supply. The other bennefit of hydrogen is the home heating problem. Imagine a battery bank heating a house, its possible but existing furnaces can be converted to run bottled hydrogen and all the technologies for the conversions exist. The big mistake is to put a hydrogen cell in a car. The technology for the cell exists as far back as 1972 the car that went to the moon was hydrogen powered- it worked. Hydrogen is greener than electric. Electric has ground water contamination factors- imagine all those batteries after say ten years. Thanks for your posts and I’ll be on look out for more.
    Creating 13000 jobs is great. Hydrogen could put everyone back to work.Politics is blocking hydrogen production vehicals. Politicians are whores. Then there is a saftey factor, hydrogen bottles are way stronger than gas tanks in cars. When hydrogen burns it goes straight up as it is lighter than air s oppossed to gas which flows. The electric cars are built light. light as in not safe in collissions or as safe as say a sedan. With hydrogen vehicale could be build larger and safer. Thanks again forgive my ranting.

    because of PEAK OIL we must move to other technologies or civilization may collapse
    those other technologies could be multiple
    we have begun the journey – that’s a good thing
    however we still have the food problem
    Farmers not only use machinery powered by oil to propagate, cultivate and harvest our food
    fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide are produced from oil and gas
    when oil goes into decline – so will food production
    plastic packaging also comes from oil
    encourage the production of local food production by buying locally grown food
